The hottest form is the Bird’s Eye Chili Pepper, which is also known as Chili padi. This refers to the small size of the chili that reminds people about the small size of paddy (rice), the staple food in the region. These tiny little fiery chilis point upward from the plant and their colors change directly from green to red. This type of chili can be found in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines but most commonly in Thailand. Although small in size compared to other types of chili, the chili padi is relatively strong at 50,000 to 100,000 on the Scoville pungency scale. Malaysia consumes about RM140 million worth of chilies each year

Tepín (Capsicum annuum v. aviculare), the tiny round fruit 1/4″ across, is only harvested from wild plants growing in the desert mountains of Northern Mexico, much hotter than Habanero, Scotch Bonnet or Tabasco. Plants are late maturing, usually requiring 120 days for green fruit and 200 days from the setting out of plants to mature red ripe fruit.

All pepper plants are perennials when protected from cold, so the Tepin can be grown in 3-5 gallon containers, and brought indoors during the winter months of frost, and then taken back outdoors in spring, when nights warm back up into the 50s and higher.

Plants grow into round perennial bushes, and kept in a container year-round and protected from cold, you can keep the same plants growing for at least 4-5 years that way, and plants can live as long as 30-50 years. Being a wild plant, seeds can take 3-5 weeks to germinate at 80-85°F daytime soil temperatures , with the total germination rate from 55%-90% .
